Andy Kay Bio
Andy Kay’s first art instruction was as the student of Chinese painting
master HoTit-Wah in New York City after a childhood spent in Cincinnati.
From the beginning of his varied art experiences, Andy was learning to see
the world around him with the advanced aesthetics of the Orient.
Feeling attracted to theater and dance, he
made his way to Stuttgart, Germany to study stage design at the
Kunstacademie from 1973 to 1975.
In 1976, Andy relocated to Hawaii to assist his master Ho Ti-Wah in establishing the Chinese Art Center. There, his work was included in the traveling exhibition with Mr. Ho which was displayed at major museums in China. In being part of one of the first art exchanges from the West to the newly opened China, Andy found himself in the humbling position of teaching the Chinese, newly emerging from the horrors of The Cultural Revolution, their own traditions.
Back in the United States, he was also chosen
to exhibit nationally his understanding of the dual cultures with a
two-year tour entitled East Meets West sponsored by the Mid-America Arts
Alliance and the National Endowment for the Arts.
Through his numerous exhibits in galleries
around the world, as well as many site-specific commissions, Kay is
represented by numerous works in major private collections and major
pieces for public spaces in Hawaii as well as abroad. Andy Kay’s design
work has appeared on stage with the costumes and sets for dance
repertories in the United States and Europe including the Stuttgart Ballet
(Germany), the San Francisco Ballet, the Frankfurt Ballet (Germany), The
Jamison Project, and the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater.
Kay has spent much of his spare time over the
past decade teaching through the auspices of the Hawaii Department of
Education and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute based at the
University of Hawaii.
In addition to his generosity in the field of public education, Andy has developed a traveling workshop introducing the basics of zen painting. This has brought him many new students in his travels to locations in Arizona, California, Maine, Washington State, the Basque region of Spain, and full circle to New York and Germany. |
